Looky’s Aid was founded in memory of Lucas Paul ‘Looky’ Martin, who tragically passed away from meningitis in September 2023 at the age of 21.
Despite his young age, Lucas’s strength of character, and the principles by which he lived his life – Love, Optimism, Ambition, Determination and Selflessness (or ‘LOADS’ for short) – have left a profound effect on countless people and have inspired his family and friends to keep his positive contribution alive through the foundation of Looky’s Aid.
Looky was a keen junior footballer. He captained Marown Juniors and won several junior tournaments with them. He joined the IOM junior squad at 11, and also captained them on several occasions, and when he was 14 he had trials for MK Dons, and prior to starting university was playing for Douglas Royals. He was also a keen all round sportsman, captaining both the King William’s College first XV rugby and first XI cricket teams.
At the time of his passing, he’d just graduated from University of Liverpool and was planning to restart in local football once he’d secured employment on the Island.
“His loss has devastated our family. His mum Nicola, his two older brothers, Connor and Bradley and myself. He wasn’t just a great sportsman, he was also a great human being who helped so many people in his short life. We described him as a captain in life as well as a captain on the playing field. When he died we found out that he had registered for organ donation, something which he advocated to his friends. Consequently, his liver and kidneys were used to save three lives and he’s been posthumously awarded the Order of St John, which will be presented to the family at a church service on Saturday 2nd December at St George’s, Douglas from 2:15pm”
His Father, Brett
The family have set up a charity, Looky’s Aid, as their way of honouring him. The aim is to help young people facing adversity (poverty, disability, bereavement etc). They feel it is a great way of keeping his legacy alive while making a positive contribution to society.
Currently in the process of being finalised, the basic aims of the charity are explained on the ‘holding’ website, www.lookys-aid.org and there’s more about Lucas himself on www.lookymartin.com.
One of the first fundraisers for Looky’s Aid will be a charity football match being played on Tuesday 12th December (19:00) at The Bowl. The game will be between Isle of Man Football Association Select XI and Marown AFC Select XI. We would encourage as many Ravens fans to attend as possible. Anyone wishing to watch the game can make a donation of their choice via a JustGiving page for the match here.
The whole of the FC Isle of Man community would like to send their heartfelt condolences to Looky’s family and friends and wish them every success with the establishment of the charity in his memory
