Match Report: Cheadle Town (A)

FC Isle of Man were dispatched 4-0 away at Cheadle Town on Wednesday night after a rather meek performance.

It was the side’s third loss in five games.

The Ravens started the game on the front foot and forced Cheadle keeper James Hodges into a couple of rushed clearances as the high press pushed the hosts back.

In a game with few early chances, Sean Doyle was unable to direct a header from Jacob Crook’s goalwards in what proved to be a highlight of the Ravens’ half.

Just after the half-hour mark, the hosts, who had taken control of the game and forced Killey and his defence in to action to keep it level, finally made their breakthrough.

A good move down Cheadle’s right wing gave fullback Matt Cook the chance to whip in a ball to the near post which was met by Connor Martin who fired first time past Killey, who had no chance of stopping it.

Just before the break, Cheadle would have their second, even if it had more than a whiff of offside.

Harrison Bickerton picked up a half-cleared corner and let fly, his shot didn’t have enough by itself, but defender Ben Hampson’s diving header put enough on it to give the hosts a 2-0 lead, despite the prolonged protests of the travelling team.

Alex Harrison tried to freshen things up at the break with the introductions of Charlie Higgins and a debut for Nathan Little.

The latter did well in the middle of the park and was probably the Ravens’ best player in the second half as he tried to get on the ball and influence play, a rare highlight on a dismal night for the side.

Luke Booth’s running saw him have the Ravens’ best chance of the half as he forced a decent stop out of Hodges and while Higgins and Jacob Crook linked up well down the left, the end product was never there to give the Ravens a chance to fight their way back into it.

Cheadle eventually got their third in the 63rd minute when a ball over the top found Kaleb Parkinson, his touch took him past Crook and he made no mistake in the finish to slot past Killey.

While the real contest was over, Cheadle would add a fourth in the 93rd minute as Danny Byrnes cut in from the right and picked his spot to secure a 4-0 win for the home side.

FC Isle of Man are back in action at the Bowl on Saturday as we welcome Padiham.
